Anna Jevromovic, Brightlys Dry Cleaners
Received a call from a distressed owner of a dry cleaning business who claimed she had not made a profit in 8 years of trading. After a thorough audit of her business model realised that as most of her turnover was based on commercial work, therefore retail side did not have to be open for 9 hours per day, halved her hours of operation, which led to substantial cost savings in wages and utilities and freed the owner up to focus on growing her other business. She is now making more money, working less hours and more motivated than ever before. I continue to provide ongoing advice and support to the owner and have worked successfully with her for 9 months now. By her own admission, i have become an integral part of her business and we are now in the process of negotiating the purchase of a 3rd dry cleaning business and i have been charged with the due diligence, negotiation, fund raising and structure of the purchase. At the same time i am developing a management structure/organisational chart for the business and also working through a marketing plan which i have effectively put together. The client is Anna Jevromovic, Brightlys Dry Cleaners, Coventry

Coates & Co - A growing business
John owns and manages Company C, our client, which is a successful independent advertising agency. He plans to raise some capital against the business, or perhaps sell if he can find the right buyer. John knows an investor or buyer will want to know all about his business but for years he has been too busy to deal with some of the risks a growing business faces. None of the employees have contracts; he has no policies to deal with employee complaints or disciplinary action; there is no staff handbook to deal with equal opportunities, data protection or parental and maternity rights. For a fixed fee we were able to draft the bespoke contracts and staff policies he needed and help with rolling them out. The staff feels more secure and John’s business is in better shape for the future. We have agreed an annual retainer that provides for all his employment needs and allows him to concentrate on the business.
Coates & Co - A senior executive
Harvey, our client, left as Commercial Director of his employer after many years. We advised him of his rights in this situation and how his benefits package, bonuses, share options and pension should be reflected in his severance package. We discussed the compensation he was entitled to and the best way to negotiate his departure. We were able to agree the ongoing use of the company car and a relaxation of his post-employment restrictions. The settlement agreement he was asked to sign was tailored by us to reflect the things he still needed: a good reference, his mobile number and mutual confidentiality; all of which gave him the best chance of furthering his career elsewhere.
Coates & Co - An established business grows
A national car rental business out-sources its fleet management requirements. Company A, our client, won the business and over 100 employees transferred with the contract. We advised on the inherited costs and liabilities to enable our client to win the work at the right price, as well as its plans to transfer most of the work to its head office. We advised on all aspects of the TUPE consultation process as well as discussions with the out-going business over redundancies. We drafted the letters and emails our client needed and vetted the new contract. Our client was able to grow its business successfully in a way that kept cost and risk to a minimum.
Coates & Co - Vital business protection
Company B, our client, protects the customer goodwill and confidential information of its insurance brokerage business with up to date restrictions we drafted. When a senior employee tried to leave taking his team and customers to a rival we were able to act quickly to prevent this. We got injunctions against the employee and the rival that prevented any loss of business and recovered the customer lists they planned to use. The team that our client had built up over the years stayed in place and the rival picked up almost all the legal costs.
Construction: Business Adviser: Paul Matthews of Just Business Partnerships
Background: The Company works with the construction industry, providing highly specialised and complex scaffolding services to the industrial, commercial and rail sector throughout the North of England. The typical turnover of the business had been approximately £2,500,000 pa but due to a downturn in the UK economy in 2008/9 the business experienced a drop in turnover to £1,300,000. Paul was called in to work with the MD to bring the company back up to £2,500,000. After reviewing and breaking down the types of services offered by the company, Paul recommended promoting each individual services offered by the company .i.e. Scaffolding Systems, Infrastructure, Hygienic Screens, Design Consultancy, Health & Safety Inspections and Edge Protection and rebranding and re-launching the business as a Group, which would give it a much larger and stronger market presence.

Impact of Approach, Mechanisms, Tools and Methodologies: The approach was hands-on. After completing a Smart Business Reality Check Paul worked directly with the Managing Director to help develop and re-launch the new brand. Key dates and milestones were set and met and the re-launch took place successfully. As a result of Paul working with the MD the business recovered and is on target increased its sales to over £3,000,000 in 2013.
George Xidias Owner of Tasty Fish
An old bank client of mine, who runs a fish & chip shop in Kettering, asked me to review his business model as at the time it was not generating the profits he was expecting. After a thorough review i spotted that his gross margins were lower than the industry norm and his wage/turnover ratio at 24% was too high. reviewed the whole pricing strategy, portion sizes, buying policy and customer flow per hour/day and week and made subtle changes to the operation. After just 4 months, the gross margin increased by 6.5% and wage/turnover ratio reduced by 4%, following the introduction of some clever marketing (loyalty cards, special offers, direct targeting for outside orders etc) the business has been turned around and profits have risen by over 35%. Client decided to rent the business and is now generating almost as much in rental income than he was when he worked full time. George Xidias Owner of Tasty Fish, Kettering.

Industrial Boiler Manufacturers - Private Sector
Background: The Company designs, manufactures and installs a wide range of industrial Bio-boilers, heating and cooling systems for the commercial sector. Paul Matthews was called in 2010 due to the company being hit hard in the 2009 recession when it lost almost 25% of its business, reducing its turnover down from £1,000,000 to less than £750,000. Paul’s approach was to provide the MD and his management team with the support, advice, management tools, techniques and methodologies needed to develop and grow the business back to £1,000,000. With Paul’s intervention in 2011 sales reached £998.000 with a further increase in 2012 to just under £1,200,000. The company is now on track to achieve £1,460,000 for 2013-14 and £1,650,000 by 2014 -2015. Due to this success they are moving to new larger premises and look forward to taking on 5 new members of staff to accommodate additional growth.

Approach, Tools and Methodologies The approach was hands-on. After initially completing a Smart Business Reality Check, Paul worked alongside MD and his team to develop the management and organisational skills needed to manage the business. This included: • Setting-up and reviewing financial and operational performance against targets on a weekly basis
• Streamlining and establishing a tracking system to monitor and measure production and sales performance
• Establishing a system for invoicing and collecting monies owed on a weekly/monthly basis
• Working with the MD to produce a sales and marketing model which was designed to win and retain new customers

“ We used the report to help us pinpoint where we were going wrong and identify where we could make improvements. The results were nothing short of enlightening as we were able to identify hidden weaknesses we didn’t know we had. These were quickly dealt with and the business has gone from strength to strength. I would highly recommend it. ”
